had a cat in my store who had been
returned to the local Humane Society twice for urinating out of his box, generally on a comforter or something soft. Sparky was a handsome and shiny coated orange tabby. But
his behavior was making it impossible for him to remain in a permanent home.
Indiscriminate urination is the most common reason that cats are surrendered to shelters and Humane Societies. Those who are not surrendered are often put in the
garage and then outdoors to live a dangerous and unhappy life. I knew that we had to manage Sparky and do everything we could to modify this unacceptable behavior.
He was a very sweet guy who deserved nothing short of the best home and family.
I consulted with a Veterinary Behaviorist at U.C. Davis Shelter Medicine Program. She helped me to intervene with this behavior. Ultimately Sparky got the best home ever
with his new mom, Jennifer. She had another 'special needs' cat that she had adopted from my store. And Sparky has never made a 'mistake' in his new home. He and
Oscar are lucky cats to be in Jennifer's home.
